Ivanova Alfred Nobel University, Dnipropetrovsk THE CATEGORY OF INTERTEXTUALITY AND THE PROBLEM OF ITS TRANSLATION Intertextual interaction of individual texts for almost three decades has been an object for intense study by a number of modern specialists in the spheres of linguistics, philology, culture studies, semiology and philosophy. The works of such well-known linguists and critics, as Y. Kristeva, Y. Stepanov, V. Zhirmunskiy and M. Bakhtin have been central to the idea of intertextuality. The term “intertextuality” has a broader meaning in today′s context than in the theories of Y. Kristeva that she revealed in one of her first works on intertextuality "Word, Dialogue and Novel". Her notion of intertextuality refers to the literal and effective presence in a text of another text. According to the studies of key researches, intertextuality can be recognized through certain techniques that represent the words and utterances of others: 1) direct quotation; 2) indirect quotation; 3) mentioning of a person, document or statements; 4) comment or evaluation on a statement, text, or otherwise invoked voice; 5) using recognizable phrasing, terminology associated with specific people or groups of people or particular documents; 6) using language and forms that seem to echo certain ways of communicating, discussions among other people, types of documents. The problem of translation of intertextuality can be approached from two perspectives. The first is based upon the intertextual reference itself as a translation process, equipped with metatext (the reference itself) and a prototext (the text to which the reference is made). The second one concerns intertextuality implied in translated texts and texts being translated and the problems connected with cultural translatability. The analysis of specialists in the sphere of linguistics revealed that the overwhelmingly most common transformations made in the process of translation of this phenomenon are: 1) replacement; 2) addition; 3) omission; 4) contamination.
